BANDUNG, unpas.ac.id – Data in education sector, such as academic, students’ profile, employees and financial, is the campus’ specific assets that need to be protected. These items mostly contain confidential data and information which are only for campus purpose.
The security of campus information system needs to be maintained properly and carefully to protect these crucial data from the leak or abused by people. In this case, Universitas Pasundan appointed the Team of Information Technology Infrastructure to observe and make sure the data secured within campus.
Ferry Mulyanto, ST., M.Kom, PIC for Information Technology Infrastructure said that the system of network security in Unpas use a simple technology, but it is proper to protect campus’ data security. Apart from that, he also involves students from Informatics Department as special team in the security sector that has to monitor the system regularly.
“Until now, Unpas relies on a firewall and several additional applications to secure campus data. Before supervising system security, the special team was appointed with the task to audit the web and identify in which vulnerabilities have the potential to be hacked,” he explained, on Tuesday, 22 September 2021.
Other than related to the research importance, student empowerment is also expected to be able to improve system security and protect the important component on both data of students, teachers, employees and other human resources. It is because the wider the involvement of other parties, the bigger the security problems are.
Security threats can also appear from application used, such as software, deployed web-based application, as well as database system. From the infrastructure point of view, it even gets more complex: configuration failure or insecure network/service settings could lead to a bigger incident in campus’ Information Technology.
Ferry also regretted that until now there has been any special regulation regarding the security or privacy for educational data. For state universities, there are official guidelines provided by the government, but they are still in general because they are intended for all state agencies.
This security guidelines are accessible on Permenpan RB No 23/2020 regarding the Functional Position of Computer Institution (lit. Jabatan Fungsional Pranata Komputer). He thought that there need to be specific regulation about data security in educational sector to be adopted and become references; not only in state university but also private university.
“I think, it is important to set specific regulation regarding the security on educational data, as well as in other sector. We are now in need to give the big warning or precaution about big data, machine learning, and others. If we cannot maintain and secure them, I think we should be worried that it could be readable by robot or crawler doing scraping website,” he explained.
So far, the system or technology used to protect the network in Unpas has been reliable. Unpas only needs to improve collaboration and team cooperation to make sure its websites accessible.
“We need to set up a standard of creating web-based application to avoid hacking. But, what is most important is, to prepare the backups, security system and security testing,” he concluded. (Reta)*
