In the field of business, the word that is mostly discussed recently is VUCA. When information technology has outstandingly evolved and the advent of digitalization and artificial intelligence have made the world of economy and business being in Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity (VUCA), the condition of VUCA shifts the dominance of two ‘magical’ words that have for decades been the mindset of the business world: effectiveness and efficiency.
These are the saying from Rector of Unpas, Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Eddy Jusuf Sp., M.Si., M.Kom when giving his speech in the public lecture held by One Asia Foundation, on Wednesday, March 11th, 2020, at the Hall of Oto Iskandar Dinata Kampus IV Unpas, Jalan Setiabudhi, Bandung.
The Rector also said that the event was made possible between the partnership of Unpas and One Asia Foundation. “This event is the second one. Last year, Mr. Yoji Sato as the founder of One Asia Foundation attended the same event to give a public lecture. He felt concerned about the condition of world society that have been still self-centered. This is the potential factor which might cause World War III that will probably destroy the world and people who are in it,” said the Rector.
Recently, there are 11 universities becoming the members of One Asia in Indonesia. Unpas is the one and only private university that has the opportunity to be part of it.
The purpose of One Asia Foundation is to give contribution in creating the same understanding between members of the community to keep the peace of Asia and global security, especially when the world is facing the conflict of ethnicity, race and religion. These will even lead to a war in several regions of Asia and Middle East.
This year, One Asia raised “Exploring Ideas in Entrepreneurship within Asian Community” as a theme. This is an effort to respond the challenge that we have been facing this far, as stated above. For this purpose, the committee presented several interviewees who were not only from academics, but also practitioners.
“This event of education is also expected to create cadres who are able to respond to national issues –Asian’s issues in general, by being able to become peacemaker, influencer for the realization of partnership and collaboration across ethnicities, nations and race. In addition, they are expected to be young entrepreneurs who still care about their surrounding environment, as well as supporters of the spirit of mutual cooperation which is currently starting to fade,” said Prof. Eddy Jusuf.
The Rector also confirmed that in improving the quality of a nation, there was no other way but by improving the quality of education. “Improvement of education in a nation should be the main priority. It is very important because there will be only the qualified-person who can last longer than others in the future,” he confirmed again.
United Nations, through one of its institutions UNESCO (United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has already issued four pillars of education, which are: (1) learning to know; (2) learning to do; (3) learning to live together, and (4) learning to be. Its third pillar should be our main focus to emerge mutual respect, open-minded and willing to give-and-receive through a process of mutual learning to live a life together.
