BANDUNG, unpas.ac.id – The existence of cloud computing technology for field of education has a really important role, especially in the Covid-19 pandemic which requires teachers and students interact to each other, both online and hybrid.
To optimize the hybrid learning method, Universitas Pasundan adopted Amazon Web Services (AWS) and apply the cloud technology installed to the online system since it is considered more reliable and efficient at cost and security.
AWS is a platform cloud providing more than 200 global services from the center data. AWS services are considered more varied: including cloud computing, data migration, security and privacy assurance, high-quality data storage, database¸ management tools, and analytics.
Unpas Administrator of Technology Information System, Ferry Mulyanto said that before migrating to AWS, Unpas has already tried several cloud providers. In 2017, Unpas applied and installed Amazon EC2 to the virtual web machine to support repository.
“Repository is used to save student’s publication output, including final assignment report, thesis and dissertation. The next year, Unpas switched it on to Amazon S3 and Amazon CloudFront to improve website’s performance up to 70 percent,” he said, on Friday, 16 July, 2021.
In 2019, Unpas was challenged when maintaining the on premise academic server which stored all transactions of courses and students’ data. The unstable electricity power often caused the hard disk device to crash and caused the loss of valuable data.
“Unpas then decided to choose AWS to overcome internet connection or electricity that hampered website performance,” he explained.
AWS was chosen because it can meet the need for hybrid learning optimization, considering that the learning process requires connection stability, reliable server performance, and a fairly high level of security.
“After switching the academic server on to AWS, we do not need to think about the physical infrastructure maintenance and management. We only need to scale it vertically and horizontally if we need to improve server capacity during high transaction,” he continued.
By optimizing hybrid learning using AWS, students and teachers will not have to deal with some issues when running the learning process. In addition, there is no need to worry about security and data from the web service that is used.
“We made a lot of savings in terms of infrastructure, especially on server equipment and licenses, because it costs a lot to manage ourselves. With AWS, Unpas can have access to AWS data center infrastructure which is internationally standard and complies with the highest security levels,” he concluded. (Reta)*
