BANDUNG, unpas.ac.id – The visit of Head of People’s Representative Council for the United States Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan some time ago increased China’s alert related to United States’ support to Taiwan claimed as its part of regions.
China strongly condemned Nancy Pelosi’s visit and began four days of military activities in six zones around Taiwan. China has shown its anger by carrying out a number of military activities near Taiwanese waters to blockade Taiwan’s air and sea space.
In response to this, teacher of Department of International Relation as well as Vice Dean I of FISIP Universitas Pasundan, Dr. Kunkunrat, M.Si. assessed that one of the missions of this visit follows US concerns about the possibility of a united power of Russia and China to take over western domination.
The war between Russia and Ukraine had given huge impact to the international politic situation, especially western domination. Russian invasion to Ukraine was mentioned to be going to shift western domination when China is in a superpower-stated, other than Russia and United States.
“Taiwan is protected by the US as a ‘satellite’ to control China. When Taiwan is considered equal or equal to other countries, of course China is angry, because China always says in its diplomacy that Taiwan is part of its territory,” he said on Friday, 5 August 2022 on the Unpas Talk podcast.
According to him, China’s power in the global economy is very strong. Its economy is predicted to overtake the US in the next decade. If the powers of China and Russia unite, it is feared that the two will become rivals of the US.
“The US now has a bit less domestic support; the dollar is getting weaker. China does have an economic slowdown, but China’s friendship with Russia has the potential to be extraordinary, for that the US is trying to interfere with Taiwan. In my opinion, this could be the biggest geopolitical change,” he continued.
Indonesian’s Position on the War of China-Taiwan
The feud between China and the US is a classic issue because the two countries have long sought to be number one with each other. Given that China is Indonesia’s main trading partner, what should be Indonesia’s position in responding to this classic conflict?
Dr. Kunkunrat said that Indonesia could play a neutral role because its diplomacy was like rowing between two reefs (free and active politics). This system is much more straightforward, not pro-western or eastern, so that Indonesia is free to determine its attitude towards international conflicts.
“Indonesia can voice up the solution to reduce the tensions between conflicting countries. To reach a diplomatic solution, there must be an easing of tensions first, then a ceasefire, and then entering the negotiating table,” he explained.
He emphasized that global geopolitics and geoeconomics should be a concern because they could be triggers or consequences. Today the world needs the wisdom and responsibility of state leaders to maintain peace and stability. (Reta)**
