Relation between the State and Religion, Relevance of Madinah Charter in Islamic and Indonesian Context

Posted on October 3, 2021

BANDUNG, unpas.ac.id – On the commemoration of Hijri New Year 1 Muharram 1143 H, on Wednesday, 11 August 2021, Unpas presented the scholar ulema as well as Rector of Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) and Professor of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Prof. Dr. Komarudin Hidayat to provide the study entitled ‘Implementasi Spirit Piagam Madinah dalam Konteks Keislaman and Keindonesiaan’.

Hijri New Year is closely associated with the event of Prophet Muhammad PBUH’s migration or Hijrah from Mecca to Yatsrib (Madinah). The professor explained that Hijrah is one of moving ethos which shows that Islam is a dynamic religion that teaches its people to keep moving on.

“There are three powers in human self that needs to be synchronically moving, namely physical health, though and heart; these three powers need to be always in balance. It is grateful when we have our healthy physics, we can think clearly and properly, and have our heart pure in order to gain the beauty of having religion. These three must be in balance in order not to make the religion as an object of debate,” he said.

In Islamic context, learned from the spirit of Madinah Charter, there were a lot of goodness that can be taken as an example from the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Before receiving the revelation, he had already been known as Al-Amin, a person who was trustworthy, honoured and praiseworthy.

These showed that it was not never enough to rely on reason-understanding only in educating a believer’s individual, but also with grace and affection. It is shown as kindness, beauty and peace as what Prophet Muhammad PBUH showed to us.

“In the beginning of Islamic development, there were two things that became the spotlight on Prophet Muhammad PBUH. He was sent by Allah to create the grace and compassion for the universe and make people perfect. Humans are indeed created by Allah with good tendencies, but the goodness itself would not be perfect if it has not led to tauhid yet,” he explained.

Humans still need guidance in the dimension of divinity, spirituality and tauhid. If they are not aware that they are spiritual being, they will be stuck with such short worldly dimension.

Meanwhile, in the Indonesian context, the country itself is actually plural, like Madinah. It was proved by the proliferation of sultanates that maintain Islamic solidarity. They voluntarily built a house together, not an Islamic state, but a godly republic.

He thought that Indonesian history was also similar to the beginning of Madinah Charter formulation. Pancasila, as the state basis, was initiated by Moslems. Even the elements of theology, humanity, unity, deliberation and justice were all in the Koran.

“Pancasila is a Moslem’s contribution which ties the nation’s unity. In Indonesian context, Pancsila is indeed a social basis that we need to keep to create academician, technocrat, entrepreneur and other levels of work that can build Indonesia together,” he concluded. (Reta)*
