BANDUNG, unpas.ac.id – How do you feel being a medical student during pandemic? How is the online learning system implemented? In fact, Faculty of Medicine is closely related to laboratory practices which require students work and attend in a lab.

During Covid-19 pandemic, various innovations were initiated by Faculty of Medicine Universitas Pasundan to present the qualified learning process; but students are still required to do laboratory practice although it is not directly done at the lab.

Adaptation of medical education in Covid-19 pandemic era has been carried out virtually by using few demonstration-props. Both teachers and student are forced to think creatively, especially is using facilities and infrastructures to the fullest to do the skill practice.

Unpas’ second-year medical student, Dina Anandita Irawan shared her stories while she has been studying online. Laboratory practices which should use the laboratory props/equipment were then switched into the common items found in the house.

“For doing practice of giving infusion, I replaced the infusion bottle with mineral water bottle one. When I did that, I also asked for help from my parents, relatives, and even used dolls and bolsters, and pretended them as [my] patients for practice,” she said.

Another unique story came along the way when Dina had to do the injection practice. She had difficulty finding a substitute for mannequins to be injected, especially those which have human-like structure in skins, muscles and fleshes.

“That is where we had to be creative. In the end, I used a chicken an injection object because it had similar structure with human. The teacher still monitors and supervise from Zoom, as well as directs us to act if we were in the laboratory,” she continued.

The teachers also often make demonstration video of clinical skills. Before taking practice, they have already made a demo on medical practices for students to follow. According to Dina, it is a must for teacher to be creative for teacher for doing clinical practice.

“Although it was online, the competence of Medical Education still focuses and targets on direct practice to the patient. Therefore, we really needed a substitute object; because direct practice is quite different with the diagnostic when having virtual learning process,” she continued.

Self-skills on doctor’s competence standard, which are skill and setting for handling the patients are required be understood. Students should have been trained for certain; such as when they need to treat wounds, examine patient complaints, and others.

“Unpas Faculty of Medicine strongly emphasizes students to establish closeness with patients through communication. According to its purpose, medical students were formed as prospective doctors with SAHAM values, namely someah, akhlakul karimah, handap asor, and motekar. I really feel these values even though I did the practices at home,” he concluded. (Reta)*
