BANDUNG, unpas.ac.id – Recently, the West Bandung Regent was named a suspect in the alleged corruption case of the Covid-19 social assistance fund. Previously, the Minister of Social Affairs had also been named a suspect with the same suspicion.
Responding to this case, Vice Rector III of Unpas and Public Communication Observer Dr. H. Deden Ramdan, M.Sc., CICP. DBA revealed, in addition to the roles of ministries, state institutions, the participation of political elites, and the mass media, there needs to be other, more significant steps to get rid of corruption.
“Role of the public also becomes the important factor to get rid of corruption, because the public themselves could control it socially,” he said on Tuesday (April 6th, 2020).
He said that the public is forced to be able to see and analyze the corruption potential happening within their environment. It is intended to make it easier to get rid of corruption.
“The public is required to actively take role on the process or steps of the program and its control, such as socialization, planning, implementation and perseverance by giving their power, thoughts and material,” he said.
The other important step that needs to be paid attention to is to build the competence, professionalism and integrity of state officials to firmly prevent and reject corruption and provide maximum service. Apart from that, the law regarding getting rid of corruption also needs to be revised.
“The law [regarding getting rid of corruption] can be revised by closing the gap of corruption and setting tougher penalties for state officials involved in corruption,” he continued.
The Vice Rector also added that the increase of public participation in prevention efforts as a form of getting rid of corruption can also be done through socialization and education. With this, the capacity of the public in reporting corruption cases will also increase.
The next main point is that the government should regularly re-record official assets to monitor the circulation of assets owned. Through registration, the government can trace the origin of assets to determine whether or not there are indications of a criminal act of corruption.
“Lastly, but not least, the step is to make it effective and strengthen the function of monitoring and supervising on other law institution in handling corruption case. Therefore, we hoped that the case can be reduced significantly,” he ended. (Reta Amaliyah S)*
